A sudden disaster strikes everyone’s favourite ice cream shop, With A Kick. Not only does it threaten the livelihood of its owner, Patrick, but also his loyal assistant Lee. The last thing in the world Patrick would ever want to do is hurt Lee, either physically or emotionally. Why would he? He’s been falling in love with Lee since the day Lee invited himself into the shop’s business and Patrick’s life. But familiar and deeply-held insecurities hold Patrick back – he’s too gruff for Lee, too old, and his labour-of-love business is never going to make him rich.
Lee is weary of trying to make Patrick see how much he admires and cares for him. To Lee, it’s a very straightforward situation. Patrick is sexy, Patrick is smart, Patrick needs Lee’s help – and Lee needs Patrick in his life as more than a boss. All the characteristics Patrick finds inhibiting, Lee finds attractive. However, if Patrick’s apparently never going to make a move on Lee, how long should Lee wait to make his own move? Maybe Patrick thinks Lee is too clingy, too immature. Maybe Lee should give up his romantic hopes completely. If, that is, he can bear to do it.
The disaster at the shop brings them a whole new opportunity to work – and love – together to make a go of things. They’ve both got to look at each other in a whole new way. With the help of all their With A Kick friends, this could be make or break for the reluctant couple!

4.5Finally, finally, FINALLY!! The story of Patrick the oblivious and Lee the adorable! Finally! I am a fan of the With a Kick series but I have been waiting for these two. I was very worried, since these two have been present throughout the series, wanting and not doing anything about it. Would it be as good as I hoped they’d be? Thank ice cream, YES!
Patrick is the grumpy owner of With a Kick, our favorite ice cream shop that is for more than just kids. It is due to Lee’s suggestion that Patrick even started the place and it’s Lee who helps keep it going. So many couples have come together around With A Kick, yet through it all Patrick and Lee just keep dancing around the issue. Who’s fault is that? Patrick’s! While Lee has made it pretty clear what he wants, Patrick has this idea that he isn’t enough, or maybe he’s too much, for Lee. Until that fateful day when a random spark ignites the building, with Lee in it.
The accident that hurts Lee does a number on With a Kick and it takes an army of friends to put it back together. People that Patrick didn’t even realize would want to help, because sometimes he is just so thick-headed. It is a telling thing that while waiting to hear news of Lee, make sure he is okay from the blast, a stranger gives comfort to Patrick. “Hope your son’s well again soon.” And isn’t that a big part of Patrick’s problem, that he feels he’s too old for Lee?
Sometimes the misunderstandings between the two of them make you want to clunk their heads together. I admit from my point of view, it’s Patrick. I love the guy but come on!! Under the guise of “doing what’s best” for Lee, he’s hurting him in the process.
I loved seeing how everyone we got to meet in other books rallies together to get things repaired and With a Kick open again. They work, they raise money, they put on a show, they keep the word out. It’s an awesome community.
With the arrival of Karel, we have more problems. With Patrick constantly treating Lee as the “boy”, someone of Patrick’s own age who happens to be gorgeous, smart and funny? It’s bound to cause hurt feelings, especially when Patrick’s doubts keep resurfacing. And the longer things go on, the more awkward and tense they get. What’s it going to take to get these two on the right road?
You can definitely read this as a standalone but it packs more of a punch if you’ve read the series, as you know all the people involved here but more importantly, you see how long Patrick and Lee have been sidestepping each other. And glory be, Patrick does have a romantic side. The proof is in the mug. Adorable!
I am hoping this isn’t the end of With A Kick, because I now that I know my favorite guys are all settled, Karel needs a story. Oh, Ms. London…

4,5 stars from me!
Finally, after what felt like forever, Patrick's and Lee's story. The two men who stand behind the shop "With a Kick".
And what a story it was!
Disaster, extraordinary friends who stand together and go beyond all when one of their own needs help and finally, a love story. What more can you want?
I can't find the right words to tell you how much I loved to read about these two, to read their own story. I was waiting for this since I read the first book in the series.
I felt right at home while reading, felt connected to the characters, like I was visiting old friends. I could practically feel the panic & the helplessness Patrick felt when desaster striked or old self-doubts kept creeping back.
And that is something I adore in Clare's storys!
I was so engaged in the story, the situations and the feelings of Patrick and Lee, that there were times I was rolling my eyes and wanted nothing more than to shake Patrick - and sometimes Lee too - and talk some sense into them.
But in the end, they more or less managed it on their own ;) And I couldn't have been happier about that!
It was fantastic to meet other couples and persons from the other books again and to see how dear Patrick and Lee and "With a Kick" are to them.
All in all a story I enjoyed reading and I'm sure I will go back to the series and read all of the books again.
“Sometimes things have to go wrong in order to go right.” ~ Denise Tinsley
Patrick, of 'Double Scoop' by Clare London, is terrified when his business partner and best friend, Lee, is injured in an explosion. Patrick becomes intensely aware of how much Lee means to him and how awful he would feel if he were to lose him. The accident lowers Patrick's walls of self-deprecation just long enough to give Lee an idea of just how precious he is to Patrick, but once he knows Lee is going to be all right, Patrick withdraws again, diminishing the importance of their encounter, leaving Lee hurt and confused.
Even though the shop is damaged, all is not lost. Patrick has more friends than he ever realized and they all have their own special talents and expertise to help get things up and running again. Bryan, Patrick's accountant and best friend, with his accounting skills starts planning on ways to help financially. Brian’s partner, Phiz, and his former roommate Curtis, get busy making posters and getting the word out about the shop being closed temporarily. Eddy, the actor, has lots of connections and starts planning fundraisers. His partner, Nuri, a law student, helps with the legal stuff, while enlisting his many relatives who are carpenters and tradesmen of all sorts, to pitch in as well. Mic and his boyfriend Rob are there to offer their assistance; Rob brings his entire hockey team with them. David and Stan, and Riley and Curtis, are there too along with lots of other helpers, some of whom Patrick didn't even know. Even with all the help, it's a struggle to get everything done.
During the renovation, Patrick and Lee's relationship becomes even more strained. Gone are the days of laughing and joking, easy touches and smiles. Everything is stiff, uncertain, and up in the air. In the name of doing what Patrick thinks is best for Lee, he is oblivious to how much he's hurting him with his thoughtless words and actions. Lee keeps hoping Patrick will open up and let him know how he really feels, but he doesn't. All their friends can see that Patrick and Lee obviously care deeply for each other, but they can only stand by and watch, hoping they will eventually confront the “elephant in the room”. Otherwise Patrick and Lee will miss out on what could be true happiness.
I've been waiting for Patrick and Lee's story although I feared there would be problems. I wanted to knock some sense into them both. Patrick whose reasoning about being too old and not right for Lee was ridiculous, and Lee, although he tried to take the first step, should have demanded to know what Patrick was feeling. Bringing all the previous characters together to help Patrick and Lee created a great opportunity to review relationships between them. For those who haven't read the series, I suggest starting at the beginning and reading all the way through. Thanks, Clare, for finally getting Patrick and Lee together and for all the other eccentric, zany, wonderful characters contained in the 'With a Kick' series. A special thanks, as well, to Sue Brown for your outstanding contributions to the series. For awesome stories with humor, sex, angst, entertainment, and love, I can't imagine a better writing team than Clare and Sue! Originally reviewed at Rainbow Book Reviews.
